Kelang is a love letter to Brooklyn's melting pot disguised as a Malaysian restaurant. Chef-owner Chris Low draws from his family's Chinese-Malaysian roots, his Brooklyn upbringing, and his filmmaking eye to create something that feels both nostalgic and entirely new. The skylight flooding the back dining room and those cherry-red booths set a scene that feels lifted from a Wong Kar-wai film: moody, intimate, and a little dreamlike. The menu refuses to stay in one lane. Yes, there's the Hainanese poached chicken that made the Low family's Sunset Park spot legendary. But then there is oxtail rendang enriched with Haitian djon djon mushrooms, paratha puffed up and topped with stracciatella over red lentil dahl, and ravioli stuffed with lime leaf ricotta. It sounds like it should not work, yet every plate arrives with its own internal logic. Come for a slow brunch under the skylight with endless pu'er tea, or bring the whole family for dinner. The kitchen window glows with candlelight, Robert Glasper plays overhead, and the fermented chili sauce on every table quietly steals the show. Kelang is the rare spot that feels special enough for a first date but relaxed enough to become your regular.
