Activity Description
The "Reality Check" film series, presented by NCPA in collaboration with Cinema Collective, promotes and encourages Indian documentary filmmakers whose work thoughtfully blends creativity and integrity to reflect life and culture in the country today.
This event features two documentary film screenings:
The Dooars World
This 47-minute documentary, narrated by Dia Mirza and directed by Shaon Pritam Baral, explores the Dooars region in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. It showcases the breathtaking biodiversity of the area, home to extraordinary wildlife such as the red panda, Himalayan salamander, golden langur, and Asian one-horned rhino. The film features stunning natural behavior and rare footage of creatures like majestic hornbills, the stealthy king cobra, and 300 species of butterflies. Beyond wildlife, it delves into the blurred boundary between humans and the natural world, exploring various manifestations of coexistence within this remarkable ecosystem.
Abundance: Living With a Forest
Produced and directed by Dolly Kikon, this 22-minute film follows Zareno, a Lotha forager in the forest of Khumtsü, Nagaland. It traces foraged edible plants from the forest to the market in Wokha, highlighting the intrinsic link between the forest and the 60% of the population dependent on foraging and jhum cultivation in this part of the Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity Hotspot. The documentary addresses the impending loss indigenous communities face globally due to development and progress, which can lead to the slow obliteration of connections with land and other beings. It captures the commitment of foragers and community members to renew indigenous values, courage, and sustainable practices.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session.
