Southside

Craig Nagasawa grinds his own mineral pigments the old-school nihonga way, then sets Godzilla loose in them. The Berkeley painter's decades of work explore Japanese American incarceration and displacement with surprising humor: Gojira stands in for the artist, confronting stereotypes while childhood memories of Salt Lake City's Japantown swim through charcoal and shimmering hand-ground color.
