Once a year, monks and Bedouins light thousands of candles in the cliffs of Kidron Stream canyon for a prayer ceremony at the ancient Mar Saba Monastery. The 13km desert hike ends with a moonlit return that feels centuries deep: men may enter the monastery, while women take in the glowing canyon from the western cliffs.
