Artists and Performers

  • Nicolei Buendia Gupit: A Filipina-American multidisciplinary artist working with sculpture, video, installation, and drawing to explore the climate crisis and global capitalism's impact on migrant and diasporic experiences. She uses storytelling and memory as source material for her mixed-media works, which incorporate papermaking, collage, and mold-and-casting techniques. Gupit has exhibited internationally and teaches at the University of Vermont.
  • Jewel Pereyra: A Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Scholar at Boston University. Her work focuses on Afro-Filipina Aesthetics, examining transnational kinship networks and relational performance, particularly amplifying Filipina and Black feminist and queer performance genealogies. Her research has received awards and support from various institutions.

Activity Description

This virtual event features multidisciplinary artist Nicolei Buendia Gupit discussing her solo exhibition, "Handle with Care." Gupit will reflect on her creative processes and the conceptual development of this new body of work. The exhibition, through mixed-media and sculptural assemblages, connects personal memory with broader histories of displacement, highlighting acts of care within legacies of empire.

Following Gupit's talk, she will be joined in conversation by Boston-based writer Jewel Pereyra. They will further examine the exhibition in relation to research on U.S. imperialism, transnational feminisms, and global social and labor movements. The program will conclude with a Q&A session, allowing the audience to engage with both speakers.
