Whitney Museum of American Art

At Whitney Museum of American Art

Meatpacking District

The only major New York museum devoted entirely to American art of the 20th and 21st centuries, tracing a century of creativity from Ashcan School realism to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930 after other institutions rejected her modern art collection, the Renzo Piano-designed building sits at the foot of the High Line with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Hudson River.

Decade Downtown

Decade Downtown

June 12

The Whitney turns ten downtown with a summer of dance parties, artist-led programs, and terrace sunsets overlooking the Hudson. It's a manageable museum where you can catch Amy Sherald's portraits and still have energy for the rooftop.

Spring at the Whitney

Spring at the Whitney

June 12

Catch sunset over the Hudson from the Whitney's terraces while wandering one of America's great modern art collections. It's intimate enough to see in an hour, iconic enough to linger much longer.

Whitney Biennial 2026

Whitney Biennial 2026

June 12 at 2pm

Fifty-six artists from across the US and beyond interrogate what "American" means through paintings, sculptures, video, and live performance. The 82nd Biennial tunes you into the moods that bind us right now: interspecies kinships, geopolitical tangles, shared mythologies, and the improvised alliances we need to thrive.
