« Lunatically » – Exposition Nikolay Panayotov (Galerie Nationale, Kvadrat 500)
Old City Center
The title 'Lunatically'—borrowed from one of Nikolay Panayotov's own paintings—sets the tone for this career-spanning exhibition marking the artist's 70th anniversary. The show gathers key themes that have defined his visual world over decades: freedom of imagination, rejection of the canon, and an ironic perspective on history. Rather than a chronological retrospective, the exhibition invites viewers into a space where the rational gives way to the intuitive, and images carry meaning beyond the literal. Highlights include 'Kissing Machine,' a 10-meter painting created specifically for this exhibition, and recent works produced at Villeroy & Boch Bulgaria in Sevlievo—where Panayotov intervened on sanitary ceramics to create a dialogue between industrial form and gestural drawing. His distinctive style features a monumental, frieze-like compositional structure where figures, animals, and objects coexist in absurd yet inevitable combinations. Curated by Boryana Valchanova and Vessela Christova-Radoeva.
