Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomarev learned from Clifford Brown and played with Art Blakey. At Smalls, his hard bop quintet fills a candlelit basement where you're practically on the bandstand. The Negronis are solid, the crowd actually listens, and the whole thing feels like jazz as it was meant to be heard.
