Activity Description
This double program presents two distinct approaches to choreographic writing, from the minimalist style of Lucinda Childs to Alessandro Sciarroni's reinterpretation of a popular American dance. Both works explore variations of movement based on a simple motif developed through repetition, oscillating between abstraction and physical intensity. The performances offer an experience of time, rhythm, and relationships through dance.
-
Dance by Lucinda Childs: An emblematic work of postmodern dance, Dance is a radical exploration of movement. It features the repetitive music of Philip Glass and a cinematic setup by Sol LeWitt, deploying a continuous flow of lines, movements, and geometric patterns. Created in New York in 1979 and added to the repertoire of the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon in 2016, this piece remains modern and captivating.
-
HØPE by Alessandro Sciarroni: Created for the Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon, HØPE is inspired by the Two-Step, a popular American social dance. Originating from European ballroom dances and later transformed by migration and cowboy culture, this practice becomes the foundation for an exploration of repetition, endurance, and partner dynamics. Based on a simple rhythmic structure, it allows for extended movement and reveals variations, rhythms, and relationships among the performers.
The program highlights the physical commitment of the dancers, finding a form of powerful salvation in effort and endurance.
