If you suddenly spot a street filled with the smell of sizzling yakisoba and fresh takoyaki, chances are you have wandered into one of the city's tastiest festivals. JAPAN Fes celebrates its 10th anniversary in New York with over 30 one-day events spanning Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Dozens of vendors serve teriyaki chicken skewers, crispy karaage, onigiri, ramen and matcha shaved ice alongside crafts and cultural booths celebrating "wa," the Japanese concept of harmony. Each pop-up runs from 10 am to 6 pm, bringing communities together through shared food and culture in neighborhoods from the East Village to Astoria. The 2026 season kicks off March 28 at Astor Place and continues through October, making this the festival's most ambitious year yet. What started as a local NYC event in 2016 has grown into a global phenomenon, but New York remains its heart with the largest lineup of events anywhere in the world. Arrive hungry and ready to explore: with so many vendors and neighborhoods on the schedule, each festival offers a different slice of the city paired with classic Japanese street eats. The early events in March and April tend to draw slightly smaller crowds before summer brings out the full force of festivalgoers.
