James Edward Deeds spent four decades in a Missouri psychiatric hospital drawing meticulous portraits with arresting gazes, enlarged pupils, and odd vintage costumes. His graphite and crayon works, mostly innocent and fanciful, occasionally reveal traces of his institutional life—like the cryptic "ECTLECTRIC" scrawled across one piece.
