During the 1930s, the US put artists to work documenting American life. This talk traces how WPA realists captured everyday stories and later embraced abstraction and surrealism, drawing from rare Salon collections by Ray and Miriam Rice, Basil Hawkins, Ben Messick, and Eugene Zaikine.
