Ellen Stewart had zero theater experience when she founded La MaMa in a tenement basement in 1961. Known simply as "Mama," she became the beating heart of off-off-Broadway, championing artists' freedom to create without interference and ringing a bell before every show to dedicate the space "to the playwright and all aspects of the theater."
