Activity Description

This event features a screening of Brazilian filmmaker Allan Deberton’s award-winning queer story, "Gugu’s World." The film explores what it means to come of age and find oneself amidst an unstable world. It follows eleven-year-old Gugu, who is caught between a magical upbringing with his grandmother Dilma and an uncertain future. Gugu plays soccer with glitter but finds his childhood upended when Dilma’s Alzheimer’s disease worsens. Afraid of being sent to live with his father’s new family, Gugu tries to hide signs of Dilma’s illness from the outside world.

The screening of "Gugu's World" will be preceded by Marcelo Pereira’s short film, "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Portugal, 2025). This film tells the story of nine-year-old Miguel, who seeks a miracle to obtain a ticket when he learns Mariah Carey is coming to town. Allan Deberton will be present at the screening.
