Activity Description
This event features a screening of the 1999 film "Compensation." The film tells two Chicago love stories set almost a century apart, exploring the transient nature of love and life while highlighting the persistent challenges of race and racism over a century. Both stories feature a deaf woman and a hearing man, played by the same actors, who confront the threat of death from tuberculosis in one narrative and AIDS in the other. The film is inspired by a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar. A discussion with Director Zeinabu irene Davis, Film Writer Marc Arthur Chéry, and UC Berkeley Coordinator of the Language Exchange Program Quinta Seward will follow the screening.
